Acid–Base Pretreatment and Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Palm Oil Mill Effluent in a Single Reactor System for Production of Fermentable Sugars

Palm oil mill effluent (POME) is one of the main agro-industrial wastewaters in Malaysia. Highly polluting POME a serious threat to environment. In recent years, methods used treat are inefficient and complex terms cost or environmental preservation. The object this research propose single reactor system (SRS) obtained from wastewater discharge as promising low-cost treatment high-energy method for harvesting fermentable sugar by applying acid–base–enzyme pretreatment hydrolysis locally produced cellulase enzymes enhance biofuel production. Several experiments were conducted produce sugars through statistical methods, including characterization POME, acid-base pretreatment, enzymatic process reducing one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) results showed that highest yield, 23.5 mg/mL was achieved an SRS without having separation purification. Based on OFAT performance, optimization two factors such substrate concentration (total suspended solids, TSS %w/v) enzyme loading (μmol/min) carried out face-centered central composite design (FCCCD) under response surface methodology (RSM) develop second-order regression model. optimum production 26.6 (53.14%) with conditions 5% w/v, TSS, 80 μmol/min/mL dose. addition, can be further considered using other well treating functions minimize negative impacts.
